about Peppermint

Did you know that PEPPERMINT essential oil comes from one of the oldest and most highly regarded herbs for soothing digestion?

Its botanical name is Mentha piperita and the family is Lamiacceae or Labiatae. Its plants originate in North America, Great Britain and the Mediterranean area. [side note: It seems as though our modern {I say modern, but it’s several hundred years old} Peppermint plant is actually a hybrid of 2 other mints {Mentha spicata and Mentha aquatica}. Their families being those listed above.]

Several studies into the effects of Peppermint include:

Jean Valnet, M.D., studied peppermint’s effect on the liver and respiratory systems. 

Dr. William N. Dember of the University of Cincinnati studied peppermint’s ability to improve concentration and mental accuracy. 

Alan Hirsch, M.D., studied peppermint’s ability to directly affect the brain’s satiety center, which triggers a sense of fullness after meals.

It is steam distilled from the leaves and stem of the plant.

Peppermint should always be diluted. I prefer to dilute to a 1% solution it so a single drop will spread further over the skin.
